To me, a story is an idea that’s wrapped in a narrative bundle so that it can be shared. The better the narrative packaging, the more likely the idea will propagate on its own – people can’t resist re-telling a great story.
The experience is the moment in time and space when this idea is transferred from one person to another. There are ways to mediate, or control, this moment. You can use pictures, soundtracks, actors, architecture, actions, and a million other channels to impact this idea transfer, adding great richness (or a cacaphony of mixed signals). For some stories, a simple whispered statement might be far more effective than any of these costly options.
This blog is my way to explore the space between the story and how it is experienced. An experience is empty without an idea, and that idea is a light under a bushel without considering an audience’s experience.
I hope you enjoy Experiencing Story. Thanks for reading!
